Robin Lopez Flagrant Foul

November 26, 2017

NBA guidelines on flagrant fouls include an assessment of the defender's wind-up, impact, and follow-through in determining whether a foul deserves to be upgraded. This play doesn't jump out as an obvious flagrant (considering it's two laboring centers in the open court) but there was definitely a sense that there was something extra on Robin Lopez's foul by the way Zaza Pachulia hit the ground. The referees conferred, checked the replay, and upgraded the initially-called common foul.

In high school and college, your crew is its own replay center, so get together for a second on hard fouls that give you that gut feeling of impropriety. Especially early in the season it's great to set the tone on what will be deemed Flagrant-worthy illegal contact.
